The very root of growing an online coaching biz is getting crystal clear about who you want to help…your “right fit client.” Understanding your right fit client is essential to creating good marketing copy on your landing pages and emails and will help you design solutions that make a significant impact.
Many coaching biz owners start off uncertain about their right fit client and worry about getting too narrow and excluding potential clients. Unfortunately, when you aren’t specific about who you help, your messages are too vague. When you speak to everyone, you speak to no one.
Most experts will have you identify your right fit client with a series of demographic questions. How old are they? Male or Female? What kind of job do they have? These questions aren’t wrong but you are skipping a more important question you need to answer first.
What problem do you solve?
A better way of narrowing down to your right fit client is to instead think of them as a person with a particular type of problem.
Then once you identify what that problem is, ask yourself…”who has that problem?” Then go into extreme detail about the characteristics of the person who has that problem.
But wait- what if you aren’t clear about what problem you solve? What if it feels exactly the same as everyone else.
Answer these 3 questions to get specific on the problem you solve:
Who can you provide the biggest delta for? Think of a point A to point Z change. You can help some people go from point A to C, but who can you transform and take from A to Z and change their life? What did you solve for them?
Who do you absolutely NOT want to help? No amount of money is worth it. Who drains your energy and steals your attention from the people you do enjoy helping?
What level of problem do you want to solve? How valuable a solution do you want to create? Answering this question is CRITICAL because if you build a business solving $5 problems, that isn’t necessarily bad. But is that the business you want to build? What if you could solve a $500, $5,000 or $50,000 problem?
Now the best question… What problem do you want to build your business on solving?
Who has this problem? What are the conversations going on in their heads right now? What do they say, think and want?
Everything you write, build, or design is for this person ONLY! Go all in on THIS person.
By doing this thought homework, you also are separating yourself from every other coach out there. Now that you are clear about your Right Fit Client you can get clear on why you are EXACTLY the right solution for them. They must work with you because you specialize in exactly their problem and exactly their circumstances. Now your coaching biz is no longer competing with the thousands of others out there speaking to fat loss and getting healthy. You are no longer a commodity. You are a specialist with a very valuable solution.
Imagine standing in front of 100 of your “ideal clients.” You make your offer. You tell them how your program is going to solve their painful problem and deliver the solution they’ve been searching for. “Who wants it?” you ask.
At the very beginning of starting my online coaching business, I started doing seminars. I’d reach out to local CrossFit gyms and offer a free nutrition seminar. It was the source of many of my first email addresses and many of my first clients. I still love the opportunity to speak…but that’s exactly what it is, an opportunity.
